Total global sales crossed 403,000 units in a single month, exports hit a record high, and individual models were posting year on year growth figures that most car brands would celebrate as their best quarter ever.

BYD‘s June NEV wholesale sales rose 5.46% year-on-year to 403,472 units, marking a second straight month of annual growth. Sales also improved 5.22% from May’s total of 383,453 units, highlighting growing momentum after earlier production disruptions.

Overseas sales climbed to a new record high of 175,349 units, surging 94.73% year-on-year and contributing more than 43% of the month’s total sales. By contrast, BYD’s domestic sales were 228,123 units in June, down 22.02% year on year but up a modest 2.39% month on month. So the domestic Chinese market is still under pressure, but the overseas engine is running at full speed. Nearly one in every two BYDs sold globally in June went to a buyer outside China. That is an extraordinary shift for a brand that was almost entirely China focused just two years ago.

The sustained sales recovery comes as the company emerges from a painful technology transition. BYD is switching from its first-generation Blade Battery to a second-generation product with flash charging capability, which at one point lengthened the delivery cycles of several key models.
